I'm sure a lot of media folks and pundits will predict us in the 4-5 win range again, but I'm going out on a limb and stating that we will win at least 6 games and maybe 7. Winning 6 games would be a great accomplishment for this team, but I think how we look in games we are expected to lose will show us even more. Teams typically don't go from good to great in one season and we weren't even good last year.
That said, some of the problem players have left the program and Coach Sherman has more of his type of players than before. I think what most Aggie fans want is a team that is competitive - the kind of team that doesn't quit if they are down 14 or 21 points late in the third quarter. It is tough for many of the maroon faithful to watch another year of so-so expectations that are occasionally reached by our gridiron gang. We are far removed from the glory days of the mid '80s through early '90s. We are firmly entrenched in our second go round of rebuilding. Our athletic department is at a crossroads - the budget is not in the best shape, but every major sporting program BESIDES football is performing exceptionally well. In short, these are weird times.
I'm not going to predict a national championship, let alone a Big 12 or Big 12 South title. Heck, I can't even predict if we will beat the likes of Baylor or Kansas State, let alone the burnt orange crew from t.u. What I will predict is that this team will take on more of it's head coach's character - determined, tough and ready to play hard and smart until the end. We will see a better offensive line and a more together defense. We will have players playing for one another and not for themselves. This is why I think we can win 6-7 games and slowly take the first step towards becoming relevant. Of course injuries and tips or bounces of the ball may change this, but the talent is growing and enthusiasm is high.
