As the title indicates, our game against Baylor proved that our players and coaches have somehow figured out that it is okay to throw the inflated oval-shaped pigskin down the gridiron. For a moment, okay a few weeks, I was worried that one of the coaching assistants made copies of the playbooks to pass out to players in the summer and somehow forgot to include any of the passing plays. It turns out that McGee's right arm does resemble that of a D-1 quarterback playing at a football-crazed university. It brought tears to my eyes as he threw several passes over the middle and even threw deep against the Baylor secondary, once even connecting for a long gain.
What does all of this mean, you might ask? Why am I rambling on about the significance of passing? Well, for the first 4 games of the season, our team avoided passing deep (longer than 7 yards) and over the middle (anything further than 5 feet from the sidelines) like the plague. We managed to see over 200 yards of passing (about 60 came via the fleet feet of Mike Goodson after a dump pass - but hey, who's arguing?). Even when passes where incomplete or dropped, fans still applauded and wouldn't you know it - our overpaid unscrupulous head coach still called more passes. This actually forced the menacing, blood-thirsty defenders from the powerhouse program that is Baylor to not focus completely on our running game (sorry about the BU exaggerations).
In short - we won the game and covered the spread (for all of you anonymous Aggie gamblers out there). Over 500 yards of offense, 82K fans and we put a "W" in for the first conference game of the season. We ran the ball well, passed the ball solidly at times and our defense did just enough to keep the Waco Bears from scoring. Of course, the green and gold receivers did their part by dropping more passes than a Playmate at a nerd convention.
We've got a tougher test next week with OK State and their passing attack coming in. After that is Tech. Lots more to do. We'll see if the players can pick it up. As for our "coach", well....
