Okay, so our D looked average, at best. Our QB only threw to the flats and never stretched the opposing team's D with any kind of deep passing. Our O-line was...pedestrian. Jordan Petersen was, ahem, trying to return punts when he wasn't dropping a cameo performance as undersized-white-guy-wannabe DB. I could harp on all of these things all day, but I'll leave that up to Pat. All things considered, we did have some great plays (Mike Goodson looked frickin' phenomenal), we put some scores up and we got a great round of conditioning in against a team that we should have beaten - and we did get the win.
We'll have a tougher test this week against a Fresno State team known for it's aggressive, disciplined attack. The crowd at last week's game was great. Any time you have 80,000 for the season opener, that's a good thing (props to ex-con Martha Stewart). The students showed up in droves and it was extremely krunk of our AD to bring in Acie Law IV to share some love with the hoops program. I don't know who cheered louder for Acie, my wife or me. The team, much like my son, was asleep for parts of the first half, but did respond and put some points on. The Band did what the Band does - totally dominate halftime. The second half was entertaining and it was great to see some of our future stars get some shine.
I'd grade this game out as a strong C+, but that's okay. The goal is to get better each week and I definitely think we will. I'd rather build up to play your best when its needed most than come out like gangbusters in week one only to fall off the edge come conference time. Oh and just in case you wanted to know, it took about 3 plays into the game before Pat began comparing us to our bowl performance last year. Until next time, shine on you crazy diamonds.
